Tech review: Call of duty: ghosts rating

By shailen jagtap

Much like FIFA, NFS and Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty is a series with yearly releases. However while the first three try to keep things fresh what with new additions to gameplay, Ghosts prefers to keep things quite the same. And in this case, it really is a bad thing.

The single-player campaign has you following a narrative that insults your intelligence more than anything else, all about the near future wherein South America becomes a world superpower and invades the US. You're a part of an elite crew of soldiers known as Ghosts, looking to take the fight to the enemy. Sure it's peppered with some bombastic moments such as laying waste to soldiers in space but such scenarios are few and far between in game that's strictly by the numbers as it gets.

Compared to the Black Ops or Modern Warfare games, you'll be hard-pressed to find a reason to see the singleplayer campaign till its very end even if you do get those moments to control Riley, a dog who serves as a part of your crew and the game's unofficial mascot. Yes, it's quite boring. Did we mention that in the unlikely event you do manage to finish the single-player campaign, it's barely four hours? The moment you're done with it you unlock Extinction, a co-operative mode that lets you and three other friends square off against hordes of aliens.

It's a decent addition worth a few rounds and nothing more. And it gets worse, the multiplayer remains essentially unchanged.

In fact worse thanks to the large maps that take away from the close quarters thrills that the Call of Duty series is known for delivering. Kill streaks, perks and blistering fast gameplay all make a comeback but even the most action-packed of matches feel lacklustre due to the distances you have to travel in a map to get a kill. This simply isn't as fun as it was. All of this compounded by visuals that are subpar.

Though the developers have claimed that they've used new tech to build Ghosts, it looks rather shoddy. Not a game you'd want to showcase your new PC or console. So we have a four hour campaign that's as derivative as it gets, multiplayer that rarely is enjoyable and a cooperative mode that's worth a couple of laughs at best.

Throw in the ridiculous PC specification requirements (you need 66GB free to install this) and you'd be better served playing something else instead. This isn't even factoring the biggest elephant in the room, the price.

At Rs 3899 on PC and Rs 4299 on the PS3 and X360, we simply cannot suggest this game to anyone. Even if you are a fan of the series.
